Know when a sensor stops reporting

This article explains how to know when a deployed sensor stops reporting data or runs low on battery. It is intended for managers responsible for monitoring and maintaining sensor devices.

Identifying Offline or Low Battery Sensors

Sensors that stop reporting or have low battery raise specific items on the Actions list for easy detection.

  1. Open the Actions page where sensor status alerts are shown.
  2. Look for items labeled Sensor offline or Low battery. Each item includes a View sensor link that navigates back to the detailed device page.
  3. Check the tiles labeled Sensors offline and Sensors with low battery to see counts of affected devices.

Viewing Sensor Status Details at a Location

To monitor the status of all sensors deployed at one location:

  1. Open the target Location and select the IoT Devices tab.
  2. Review the list of devices, each shown in a row with columns for Name, Type, Status, Battery, Signal, Last Seen, and Actions for linking or unlinking the device.
  3. Use the Status filter to narrow the list by Online or Offline devices.
  4. Click Refresh to fetch the latest live sensor data.

Note that battery and signal values come from the sensor network and update each time the tab loads. A failed data read shows a Failed to load device data message with a Retry button.

Understanding Sensor Status Indicators

The sensor device status reflects connectivity, not compliance or measured value conditions:

Battery and Signal Visibility

Battery and signal status are visible in multiple places:

  • Displayed as columns on the Location > IoT Devices tab.
  • Battery and signal appear as header chips on the individual device detail page; the battery chip only shows when a battery level has been reported.

How Alerts Clear Automatically

Sensor offline and low battery items are not persistent alerts but live status indicators derived from the current device list each time the page loads:

  • These items clear themselves automatically once the device reports again or its battery is replaced.
  • There is no need to acknowledge or manually dismiss these items.
  • No push notifications or alert messages are generated for these conditions.

What Does Not Trigger an Alert

There are no alerts for measured sensor values going out of range:

  • An out-of-range reading completes its scheduled job normally, and the job auto-completes.
  • If the reading matches a risk rule, the system drafts a Technical Recommendation in the Location's Recommendations tab for review.
  • To act promptly on an out-of-range measurement, schedule a follow-up job outside the automatic cycle.
  • Connectivity and battery status are the only sensor conditions that raise entries in Actions.
