This article explains what triggers a location to become compliance-active in BriqSafe and how you can confirm that compliance activities are being generated correctly. It is intended for engineers and other users involved in setting up and maintaining locations in the system.

Understanding Compliance Activation at a Location
A location becomes compliance-active when it is configured with structures, systems, areas, and assets, all tied to an applicable control regime that governs compliance activities. Compliance activities are generated automatically by the rules engine as you build and edit the location, reflecting the required maintenance or inspection work.
Steps That Trigger Compliance Activation

Compliance activities appear on their own as you configure the location; there is no manual "generate" button.
- Create the Location and ensure it has a jurisdiction inherited from your organisation. The jurisdiction impacts control regime assignment but is not derived from the address directly. (See also note on address entry.)
- Add Structures to the location via the Structures tab. Each structure requires a Structure Type and a Facility Type. The Facility Type is critical since the rules engine uses it along with the jurisdiction to assign a control regime automatically. You may override the assigned regime during structure creation if needed.
- Create Systems under structures by opening a structure’s Systems section and adding systems such as hot or cold water. Systems serve assets and are crucial for activity generation.
- Add Areas under structures once structures exist. Areas represent rooms or zones where assets are located.
- Add Assets to structures or areas using the structure’s tree row actions or floor plan editor. When creating an asset, select its Asset Type and fill out its compliance parameters (which vary by type). Assets must be linked to one or more systems within the same location. This link determines which compliance activities are generated.
- Enter Compliance Parameters for assets by completing their dynamic parameter form. The rule engine uses these parameters to compute the asset’s satisfactory or unsatisfactory status and to generate any related recommendations automatically.
- Set Area Occupancy Status to In Use for rooms or areas. Only occupied rooms generate active compliance activities; marking an area as Vacant pauses compliance activity generation.
How the Rules Engine Generates Compliance Activities
The compliance rule engine evaluates each newly created or edited entity—the structures, systems, areas, and assets—using their assigned control regime. It uses compliance and risk rules to determine which compliance activities are necessary.
- Each control regime includes rules that apply at the structure, system, area, and asset levels.
- The control regime assigned to a structure (and inherited by its child entities) is derived from the structure's Facility Type and the location’s jurisdiction.
- The rule engine runs incrementally and automatically as you add or modify entities; there is no batch "generate" step.
- When compliance parameters on an asset are updated, the rule engine recalculates its satisfactory state and regenerates related activities and recommendations.
- If no control regime is resolved (either on the area, ancestor areas, or structure), no compliance activities are generated, and existing generated activities are cleared.
Confirming Compliance Activities for a Location

To verify that a location is compliance-active and that the correct activities are generated:
- Open the location and navigate to the Control Schema tab.
- Review the list of compliance activities, each tied to a structure, system, area, or asset. Confirm the activity names, statuses (e.g., To do, In progress, Done), frequencies, and progress counts.
- Use filters on status and activity type to narrow the list as needed.
- Reload the Control Schema tab after bulk changes or links to ensure the latest activities are reflected.
- If no activities appear despite full configuration, check that each structure has a valid control regime assigned. Lack of a regime leads to zero activity generation.
Important Notes and Common Pitfalls
- The presence of a control regime is essential; without it, compliance activities will not be created.
- Facility Type selection influences control regime assignment, so selecting an incorrect facility type can result in irrelevant compliance activities.
- Assets must be linked to systems within the same location; linking assets to systems in a different location is blocked.
- Changing asset types after entering parameters can invalidate those parameters and impact activity generation.
- When marking areas as Vacant, compliance activities for that area stop until set back to In Use, so ensure updated occupancy status to avoid compliance gaps.
- Compliance activities reflect real-time configuration changes and may appear or disappear silently without alerts to assigned engineers.
- There is no manual 'generate' or 'refresh' button; the rules engine always keeps the compliance scheme in sync automatically.
Summary
A location becomes compliance-active when it includes at least one structure with a resolved control regime, systems, areas (not marked vacant), and assets properly linked to systems with their compliance parameters entered. The BriqSafe rules engine incrementally generates compliance activities based on this configuration, visible on the location’s Control Schema tab. Regularly reviewing this tab after changes ensures your location’s compliance activities match your setup.
